George H. Ryan Sr., was the thirty-ninth governor of the state of Illinois. He served as governor from 1999 to 2003. He began his professional career as a pharmacist and went on to public service in 1972. His journey included minority leader of the Illinois House of Representatives, speaker of the house, and lieutenant governor from 1991-1999, before he was elected governor. He is best known for his work on the death penalty and the criminal justice system, and establishing relations with Cuba.

He was married to the love of his life, Lura Lynn, for 55 years. Together they raised six children and many grandchildren followed. He passed away in March, 2025, at his home in Kankakee, Illinois.
